Trump’s Bias Is a Problem—But Europe’s Cowardice Is a Catastrophe

Europe has spent decades pampering its own Frankenstein, Putin, and now expects America to swoop in and slay the monster for them—time to stop whining and start fighting.  If Europe had half the courage of the Ukrainians it claims to support, Putin would already be a historical footnote instead of a present threat. Let’s get something clear: Trump’s bias towards Putin is a betrayal, but Europe’s cowardice is a death sentence for democracy—waiting for America to intervene is nothing short of surrender.

It appears that President Trump is attempting to play peacemaker in the Ukraine conflict, but his recent actions suggest a troubling bias toward his friend, Vladimir Putin. This favoritism not only undermines Ukraine's sovereignty but also risks alienating supporters like myself who once believed in his leadership. His stance is becoming clearer with every statement he makes, and unfortunately, it tilts in favor of Putin, the war criminal who is responsible for so much suffering in Ukraine.

Just a few days ago, President Trump stated that he and Putin could achieve something "significant" regarding Russia's war in Ukraine. While the prospect of peace is always welcome, the context and manner of these discussions raise serious concerns. Trump's approach seems to sideline Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, effectively diminishing Ukraine's role in negotiations about its own future. This is not just a diplomatic misstep; it is a blatant display of bias favoring Russian interests over Ukrainian sovereignty.

And why is Trump suddenly advocating for an immediate election in Ukraine as soon as a deal is struck? Is this not a ploy to place a Putin-friendly puppet at the helm of Ukraine’s government—someone whom both Putin and Trump can manipulate like a piano? It is no secret that they see Zelenskyy as a leader they cannot control. If Trump is pushing for an election in a war-torn country, one must ask: who benefits from such a move? Certainly not the Ukrainian people, who have sacrificed so much for their independence. President Trump must tread carefully because, at this rate, he is setting himself up for a historical mistake—one he will deeply regret.

Moreover, Trump's administration has engaged in what it calls "very serious" discussions with Russia about the ongoing war, yet details remain scarce. The lack of transparency is troubling, suggesting that decisions affecting Ukraine are being made behind closed doors, without adequate input from Ukrainian leadership or consideration of their nation's aspirations. This secretive diplomacy reeks of partiality and undermines the democratic ideals that the United States claims to uphold. If Trump is truly acting in the interest of global stability, why is he leaving Ukraine out of discussions about its own future? The answer is clear—he is aligning with Putin’s interests over Ukraine’s.

Trump’s bias is not only evident in his diplomatic dealings but also in the way he pressures America’s European allies. In his quest to broker a deal, he has resorted to economic threats and blunt rhetoric, coercing European leaders to align with his vision. This strategy is not only aggressive but also exposes a fundamental flaw: a willingness to strong-arm allies while placating adversaries. Instead of holding Putin accountable, Trump is undermining European nations and their security concerns. By prioritizing a quick resolution—one that would likely favor Russian terms—Trump is dismissing the long-term security risks that come with legitimizing Putin's aggression. The war in Ukraine is not just about two countries; it is about the balance of power in Europe and the world.

This is not the first time Trump has leaned in favor of Russian interests. His past reluctance to hold Russia accountable for election interference, cyberattacks, and aggressive foreign policies paints a clear picture. His admiration for Putin’s leadership style, his dismissal of NATO’s importance, and his skepticism toward supporting Ukraine financially all suggest a disturbing alignment with Russian objectives. This pattern of behavior not only damages America's credibility on the global stage but also betrays the trust of those who once believed in his promise to put "America First." How does aiding Putin’s ambitions put America first? How does abandoning Ukraine strengthen American interests? The answer is simple—it does not.

However, while Trump’s bias is concerning, Europe cannot escape scrutiny. The continent has, for far too long, allowed a dictator like Putin to amass power unchecked. The European Union’s initial hesitance to impose stringent sanctions and its continued dependence on Russian energy have emboldened Putin’s aggressive actions. Europe’s leaders, despite their strong rhetoric, have not done enough to neutralize the threat that Putin represents. It is high time that Europe grows a backbone and addresses the Putin problem head-on rather than waiting for America to clean up the mess.

Recent discussions within Europe about deploying a peacekeeping force to Ukraine indicate a shift in attitude, but these proposals are fraught with internal divisions and a lack of consensus. Some nations advocate for a strong European-led initiative, while others fear provoking Russia further. This disunity highlights Europe’s longstanding reluctance to take decisive action. The message they are sending to Putin is clear: Europe is weak and unwilling to confront him directly. How can they expect to deter a tyrant when they refuse to present a united front?

Europe’s dependence on Russian energy has also played a crucial role in its hesitant response to Russian aggression. The 2022–2023 Russia–European Union gas dispute exposed just how vulnerable European nations were, showing their dependence on Russian energy and their susceptibility to economic blackmail. By failing to reduce reliance on Russian gas and diversify energy sources, Europe has effectively financed Putin’s war machine, enabling the very aggression they claim to oppose. Had European nations acted sooner—had they fortified their defenses, imposed stronger economic barriers, and reduced energy reliance on Russia—Putin may not have had the financial and strategic leverage to launch this war in the first place.

Given these realities, it is imperative that Europe takes a more assertive stance. It must increase its defense capabilities, cut off Russian energy dependence completely, and, most importantly, act as a unified front against Russian aggression. Half-measures and empty rhetoric will not stop Putin. The only way forward is through strength and determination. Europe must demonstrate that it will no longer tolerate the presence of a tyrant in its backyard.

As for President Trump, if he continues down this path of blatant bias toward Putin, he risks losing the credibility and support of many who once stood by him, myself included. His actions not only betray Ukraine but also betray the principles of justice and sovereignty that America has historically defended. This is a dangerous course, one that could leave his legacy forever tainted. Does Trump really want to be remembered as the American president who helped Putin tighten his grip over Ukraine? Does he truly believe that aligning with a dictator will make America stronger? He must reconsider his actions before history judges him unkindly.

At the end of the day, while Trump's partiality is alarming, Europe's complacency has been just as harmful. There is an old proverb that says, "He who permits evil is just as guilty as the one who perpetrates it." Europe must stop waiting for America to "do its laundry" and take responsibility for its own security. The days of American intervention as a default response to European crises must end. If Europe refuses to act decisively, then it must accept the consequences of its inaction.

So, Europe, it’s time to stop the excuses, stiffen that spine, and confront the monster you have allowed to grow in your midst. And President Trump, remember this: dancing with the devil may seem like a strategic move, but it rarely ends well for those who believe they can control him.
