The Putin's Puppet Speaks: Trump’s Absurd Claim That Ukraine Started the War

President Trump’s unwavering support for Putin’s narrative on Ukraine suggests either cognitive decline or Kremlin blackmail—there’s no middle ground.

When a man starts confusing history with fiction, either his memory is failing, or he’s been reading too much Russian propaganda. President Trump’s recent declaration that Ukraine started the war with Russia is not just a slap in the face of reality—it is a full-on brawl with the truth. If he genuinely believes this, he needs to see a doctor, fast. If not, then maybe Putin has a kompromat file so thick it makes Watergate look like a lost Post-it note. Either way, Trump is playing a dangerous game, and the only one winning is the man in the Kremlin.

Let’s set the record straight: Ukraine didn’t invade Russia—Russia invaded Ukraine. This isn’t a matter of debate; it is a matter of recorded history. The war officially began on February 24, 2022, when Russian forces launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, following years of escalating aggression, including the annexation of Crimea in 2014. To say Ukraine “started” this war is like blaming a burglary victim for “starting it” because they refused to hand over their wallet. It is absurd, it is insulting, and it raises serious questions about Trump’s mental state.

Trump’s remarks came during a bizarre Mar-a-Lago press conference, where he looked and sounded like a man grasping at straws—or perhaps, cue cards handed to him by a certain Russian handler. He claimed that Ukraine “should have never started it” and could have “made a deal” to prevent the war. A deal? What deal? Give Putin whatever he wants, roll over, and play dead? That sounds less like diplomacy and more like surrender, and it’s exactly what Putin has been pushing for all along.

But that’s not all. Trump has also fixated on President Volodymyr Zelensky’s approval ratings, throwing around numbers so wildly inaccurate they might as well have been pulled from a fortune cookie. He claimed Zelensky is at a “4% approval rating” when, in reality, multiple polls show that over 57% of Ukrainians still support their wartime leader. It’s worth noting that in 2019, Zelensky won the presidency with a staggering 73% of the vote—something Trump can only dream of after losing his re-election by over 7 million votes. Perhaps Trump, the self-proclaimed master of polls, should take a hard look at his own numbers: the latest Reuters poll shows his approval rating hovering at 44%, a number that should make him think twice before throwing stones at others.

But here’s the real kicker: Why is Trump echoing Russian propaganda almost word for word? The Kremlin has long pushed the narrative that Ukraine is to blame for the war, despite the obvious fact that Russian troops were the ones who crossed the border. Could it be that Trump is just that ignorant, or is there something more sinister at play?

This is where the plot thickens. Trump has a long and strange history of bending over backward for Putin. We all remember Helsinki in 2018 when he stood next to the Russian president and publicly sided with him over U.S. intelligence agencies. “President Putin says it’s not Russia. I don’t see any reason why it would be,” Trump declared, effectively throwing the entire U.S. intelligence community under the bus.

Then there was his infamous 2019 call with Zelensky, in which he dangled military aid like a carrot, pressuring Ukraine to dig up dirt on Joe Biden. That little stunt got him impeached. But now, he’s taken it to a new level: rewriting history to fit Putin’s agenda. At this point, the only question left is whether Trump is being manipulated due to sheer incompetence—or because Putin has something on him.

One cannot ignore the possibility that Trump’s mind isn’t as sharp as it used to be. Cognitive decline is a real concern, and his increasingly erratic statements—ranging from confusing Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi to claiming Biden will lead the country into World War II—suggest that his grip on reality is slipping. If he can’t remember who started a war that’s been dominating global headlines for over two years, it is time for a serious medical evaluation. A U.S President  should at least be able to distinguish between fact and Kremlin fiction.

Then again, maybe this isn’t about cognitive decline at all. Maybe Putin has his hand so far up Trump’s back he’s practically working him like a ventriloquist dummy. In plain terms, Trump’s willingness to parrot Russian propaganda, even at the cost of American credibility, suggests that something is keeping him in line. Whether it’s financial ties, compromising material, or simply an ego so fragile he can’t admit he was wrong about Putin, the effect is the same: Trump is singing Moscow’s tune like a well-trained canary.

It’s bad enough that a U.S. president is pushing Russian lies, but what’s even worse is that many Americans still believe him. This is the same man who said COVID-19 would disappear “like a miracle,” who told Americans to inject bleach, and who now expects people to buy into the idea that Ukraine started the war that is destroying its own cities. If Trump truly believes this nonsense, he needs a full neurological workup. If he doesn’t, then he’s selling out the United States for reasons only Putin and his FSB buddies know.

There’s an old saying: "When someone tells you who they are, believe them the first time." Trump has shown us time and time again that his loyalty to truth and American interests takes a backseat when it comes to pleasing Vladimir Putin. Whether that’s due to failing mental faculties or something even more damning, one thing is clear: Trump’s administration is trying to spin a victory not for America, but for the man sitting in the Kremlin, smirking like a chess master who just moved his pawn into checkmate.

Let’s not pretend this is all harmless rhetoric. Words have consequences. Trump’s false claim that Ukraine started the war gives ammunition to pro-Russian propagandists, weakens Western unity, and makes it harder for Ukraine to get the support it desperately needs. It emboldens Putin to keep pressing forward, knowing that at least one major American political figure is willing to bend the truth in his favor.

Meanwhile, the world is watching. European leaders are baffled, and even some of Trump’s own Republican allies are squirming in discomfort. The idea that Ukraine—a nation fighting for its very existence—is somehow responsible for its own destruction is so ludicrous that even MAGA diehards must be struggling to justify it. Yet, Trump doubles down, as he always does, because for him, admitting he’s wrong is worse than selling out his own country.

So here we are. Trump, once again, is proving that his allegiance to Putin outweighs any commitment to truth, democracy, or even basic historical accuracy. Whether it’s because he’s slipping into cognitive decline or because the Kremlin has a hold over him, the result is the same: a dangerous man spreading dangerous lies. The only difference now is that the stakes are higher than ever.

If Trump truly believes that Ukraine started the war, then he needs a doctor. If he’s just lying to appease Putin, then he needs an interrogation. Either way, America needs to wake up before we all end up as pawns in a game where only one man—Vladimir Putin—has the winning hand.
