The Brutal Truth Trump Must Accept About Putin Before It’s Too Late

Negotiating with Putin is like signing a contract with the devil—no matter what’s promised, the only guarantee is betrayal, bloodshed, and the slow destruction of democracy itself. In plain English, President Trump must wake up and smell the gunpowder—his friend Putin is not a misunderstood leader but a cold-blooded tyrant whose only ambition is to drown the free world in chaos and war.

They say a man is known by the company he keeps, and if President Donald Trump keeps aligning himself with Vladimir Putin, he may as well be painting a bullseye on his own legacy. The idea that Trump can negotiate peace with Putin is as laughable as trusting a fox to guard a henhouse. Putin, a leader notorious for breaking agreements and spreading chaos, has one goal in mind: total domination. History has shown that giving him an inch results in him taking a mile, and yet, Trump insists on talking to this war criminal as if they were old friends discussing a business deal. The truth is, we have long passed the stage of negotiation—this war will end only when Putin feels unbearable pain.

The recent revelations of Trump's administration engaging in “serious” discussions with Russia about the war in Ukraine are alarming. Trump claims he and Putin might take “significant” action toward ending the war, yet he refuses to say if he has personally spoken to the Russian leader. Given Trump’s past, one can only imagine what "significant" really means. Will he tell Ukraine to hand over its territory on a silver platter? Will he weaken U.S. support for Kyiv while giving Putin a free pass? One thing is certain: Putin will never honor any agreement, and negotiating with him is an exercise in futility.

It is important to remember how we got here. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 was not just an act of aggression—it was the continuation of a long-standing plan. His illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, his support for separatist movements in eastern Ukraine, and his repeated threats against NATO all pointed to his broader ambitions. Every diplomatic effort to stop him has been met with deceit. The Minsk Agreements, which were meant to bring peace to the Donbas region, were repeatedly violated by Russia. Putin operates on the principle that treaties are meant to be broken, and yet Trump thinks he can strike a deal with this man?

Putin's track record of ignoring international law speaks for itself. He has violated the United Nations Charter by waging a war of aggression. He has committed countless war crimes, from targeting civilian populations to forcibly deporting Ukrainian children. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for him, yet Trump seems unfazed by his friend’s crimes. How can the United States, a country that claims to stand for democracy and human rights, entertain the idea of working with a leader who belongs in The Hague?

Trump’s approach to Ukraine has always been troubling. He has mocked President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting that Ukraine should have simply struck a deal with Putin to avoid the war. He has downplayed Ukrainian bravery by implying that their resistance was only possible due to U.S. financial support. The man who once tried to withhold military aid to Ukraine in exchange for dirt on his political rivals now claims he can end the war overnight. But ending the war does not mean making Ukraine surrender—it means making Putin suffer the consequences of his actions.

Trump and his supporters argue that throwing more money into Ukraine is a waste of U.S. resources, but this logic is deeply flawed. Supporting Ukraine is not just about defending one country—it is about upholding global security. If Putin succeeds in Ukraine, what stops him from marching into Moldova or testing NATO’s resolve in the Baltics? Appeasement did not work with Hitler in the 1930s, and it will not work with Putin now. The only language he understands is force, and that force must come in the form of economic devastation and military resistance.

So, what should be done instead of entertaining Putin’s empty words? The answer is simple: cripple Russia's economy and empower Ukraine to fight back. Sanctions must be strengthened, loopholes must be closed, and tariffs must be increased to squeeze Russia dry. The Biden administration has already imposed sanctions on Russian banks, energy companies, and oligarchs, but they must go further. Countries that continue to buy Russian oil and evade sanctions should face severe penalties. Western businesses still operating in Russia must be pressured to leave. Russia’s economy must feel such unbearable pain that Putin’s own elites turn against him.

At the same time, Ukraine must be given every tool necessary to fight this war effectively. Delays in military aid only prolong the suffering. The U.S. and its allies must provide Ukraine with advanced weaponry, including long-range missiles, fighter jets, and air defense systems. It is not enough to help Ukraine survive—Ukraine must be able to win.

Trump's admiration for Putin is not new, but it is now more dangerous than ever. During his first presidency, Trump repeatedly sided with Putin over U.S. intelligence agencies. He refused to acknowledge Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and even called Putin’s invasion of Ukraine “pretty smart.” His campaign is now filled with pro-Russia figures who have long advocated for cutting off Ukraine. President Trump is now in power, and he must not abandon Ukraine, or give Putin a free hand to continue his rampage.

Putin himself has hinted at his preference for Trump, stating that U.S. policies under Trump would have prevented the war. This is a blatant endorsement of Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. It is also a clear sign that Putin sees Trump as a useful tool. Why would Putin favor a leader who claims to be tough on Russia? Because he knows that Trump will not act against him in any meaningful way.

If Trump truly wants to end this war, he must abandon the fantasy of negotiating with Putin. The only viable path forward is to make Putin’s life hurt like hell. Every economic, military, and diplomatic measure must be used to isolate Russia and push Putin to his breaking point. Negotiations will not bring peace—only defeat will.

For those who argue that negotiations should still be on the table, ask yourself this: how many times does Putin need to break his word before we accept that he cannot be trusted? How many more innocent Ukrainians must die before the world realizes that talking to Putin is a waste of time?

Trump has a choice to make: stand on the side of democracy and justice, or continue playing footsie with a dictator who has no intention of keeping his promises. If he chooses the latter, history will not be kind to him. The world does not need another round of empty talks with Putin—it needs decisive action.

After all, when you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas. And right now, Trump seems all too comfortable rolling in the dirt with Putin.
