No matter how Trump dances to Putin’s tune, the dictator’s borrowed time is ticking away, and the final act of this tragedy will end in his downfall. In plain English, the pages of history are filled with the wreckage of tyrants who believed they were untouchable—Putin will soon join them, regardless of Trump’s vaudeville performance.
As I was watching the news last night, I heard Fox News host Sean Hannity thanking Russia’s Putin for releasing freed Marc Fogel, a teacher held for more than three years on trumped-up drug charges. I also saw and heard President Trump say that he is grateful to Putin for releasing Fogel. That is ridiculous and dumb—nobody should thank that hoodlum Putin for releasing someone he shouldn’t have arrested in the first place. In fact, nobody should thank that thug who calls himself a president for anything. He is evil incarnate, and like all evil incarnate and dictators like him, he will soon meet his ‘Waterloo.’
I was expecting President Trump to tighten the screw on Putin with more tough sanctions and tariffs for the war crimes and atrocities he is committing in Ukraine and other places. But instead, President Trump is basically ‘flirting’ with him. I’m sitting here wondering: President Trump, has your friendship with Putin clouded your judgment? Have you forgotten that we voted for you to be an action president—not a president who showers praises on a murderous dictator? Even if you don’t want to deal with Putin and garner more credibility as a leader, I have a message for you: you are about to lose your credibility among Americans, and Putin will be dealt with anyway, as he currently lives on borrowed time.
Who is Putin, really? A dictator, a warmonger, a master manipulator who has brought nothing but misery to his people and terror to his neighbors. This is a man whose hands drip with the blood of Ukrainians and who doesn’t blink at bombing hospitals and schools. Yet here we are, with people like Trump and Hannity treating him like he deserves our gratitude. What a joke! Putin shouldn’t be thanked—he should be sanctioned into oblivion.
Marc Fogel’s arrest and imprisonment were nothing but a political game for Putin. Fogel, a teacher, was arrested in 2021 for possessing a small amount of medical marijuana for his chronic back pain—something perfectly legal in the United States. But in Putin’s Russia, everything is a weapon. Fogel was sentenced to 14 years in a penal colony, treated like a criminal for something that wasn’t a crime at all. It was never about justice; it was about leverage.
Releasing Fogel wasn’t an act of kindness. It was a calculated move—a way for Putin to distract the world from his failures and atrocities. Right now, Putin’s war in Ukraine isn’t going well. Sanctions are strangling the Russian economy, and his army is struggling. So, what does he do? He plays the old game of hostage diplomacy. He lets one person go and hopes the world will forget the thousands he’s still holding captive.
And Trump—Trump played right into his hands. Instead of using this moment to condemn Putin’s crimes, Trump basically kissed the ring. He might as well have sent him a bouquet of flowers and a thank-you card. President Trump, I hope you understand that dictators don’t respect weakness. They feed on it. By praising Putin, you didn’t show strength—you showed vulnerability.
This isn’t the first time Trump has given Putin a free pass. Remember Helsinki? When Trump stood on stage and said he believed Putin over U.S. intelligence agencies? That moment made jaws drop worldwide. Now, history repeats itself. Once again, Trump is cozying up to a dictator when he should be calling him out for his crimes.
The American people didn’t vote for a president who would go soft on Russia. We voted for a leader who promised to put America first. America first doesn’t mean thanking a dictator for releasing someone he unjustly imprisoned. America first means holding that dictator accountable. It means crushing him with sanctions until he begs for mercy. It means standing by our allies in Ukraine and showing the world that we don’t negotiate with thugs.
Putin is no fool. He knows how to play the long game. Every move he makes is calculated. When he released Fogel, it wasn’t because he felt sorry for him. It was because he needed a win—something to make himself look good on the international stage. And Trump, whether intentionally or not, handed him that victory on a silver platter.
Let me make one thing clear: Putin is not our friend. He’s not a partner. He’s not a man we should ever thank for anything. He’s a tyrant, plain and simple. The only message we should be sending him is that his time is up. That his reign of terror is coming to an end. That justice is waiting for him.
To quote the old saying, "If you lie down with dogs, you’ll get up with fleas." Trump’s continued praise of Putin risks infecting him with the stink of dictatorship. If he doesn’t turn things around, the American people will remember. We’ll remember that when he had the chance to stand tall, he chose to kneel. We’ll remember that when Putin needed legitimacy, Trump handed it to him on a golden platter.
Putin will be dealt with—there’s no question about that. He lives on borrowed time. Dictators always do. The question is: where will Trump stand when that day comes? Will he stand with the American people, or will he keep playing footsie with the man who dreams of rebuilding the Soviet empire? Time will tell. But I’ll tell you one thing—Putin’s clock is ticking, and when it strikes midnight, no amount of gratitude will save him.
As for Trump, I hope you’re ready. Because the American people are watching. And we won’t be fooled twice.
