We taught sand to think. Now fear is teaching societies how to self-destruct. History has seen this nightmare before—and it never ends cheaply.
I have heard people say that artificial intelligence is the biggest threat facing humanity. I think they are looking at the wrong suspect. AI is not the first technology to shake civilization to its bones, and it will not be the last. Fear is the repeat offender. Every time humanity discovers a machine powerful enough to rewrite daily life, panic follows close behind like a shadow that never misses its cue.
We are living through one of history's greatest
technological revolutions. I do not mean another gadget or another trendy app.
I mean a transformation so deep that it is changing how we work, think,
communicate, govern, and even define intelligence itself. History has seen this
movie before. The cast changes, but the script remains painfully familiar.
Between roughly 1880 and 1920, electricity lit up cities
that had gone dark every evening. Railroads shrank continents. The telephone
allowed people to speak across impossible distances. Automobiles replaced
horses. Motion pictures created an entirely new industry. Millions abandoned
farms for crowded cities in search of factory jobs. Families that had lived one
way for generations suddenly found themselves in a world where everything was
moving faster than their ability to understand it. That period produced
astonishing wealth, but it also buried countless occupations that had fed
families for decades. Creative destruction was not just an economic theory. It
was dinner-table reality.
When people lose certainty, they start looking for
someone to blame. That is as old as civilization itself. The social unrest of
that era helped fuel radical political movements across Europe. On one side
stood communism. On the other stood fascism. Each promised simple answers to
complicated problems. Each claimed it alone could restore order. Each attracted
followers who believed that freedom was less valuable than certainty. The
result was not merely heated political debate. It ended in dictatorship, mass
violence, and global war. History collected its bill in blood.
I see uncomfortable similarities today. The machines have
changed, but human nature has not.
This revolution began quietly with personal computers.
Then came the internet. Smartphones followed. Social media rewired human
attention. Now artificial intelligence has entered the room, and unlike earlier
inventions, it is not replacing only muscle. It is beginning to compete with
the human mind itself.
Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind recently captured this
moment with a line that sounds like science fiction but describes reality
remarkably well. He said humanity has essentially found a way to make sand
think. Silicon chips are made from sand. That simple sentence may become one of
the defining quotations of this century because it explains the impossible in
ordinary language. We are no longer mass-producing only products. We are
beginning to mass-produce intelligence itself.
Think about that for a moment.
For thousands of years, intelligence was scarce. It
belonged exclusively to human beings. Suddenly, we have created systems that
write reports, generate software, diagnose diseases, summarize legal documents,
translate languages, compose music, and solve scientific problems in seconds.
The machine never sleeps. It never complains. It improves month after month.
That is not another industrial revolution. It may be something even larger.
Some experts already believe its impact could dwarf
previous technological shifts. Demis Hassabis has argued that AI could become
approximately 10 times larger than the Industrial Revolution and unfold roughly
10 times faster. Whether that estimate proves correct or not, the direction of
travel is unmistakable.
No wonder people are nervous.
I cannot blame the truck driver wondering whether
autonomous vehicles will replace him. I cannot blame the graphic designer
watching algorithms produce images in seconds. I cannot blame the young
graduate questioning whether the career they studied for will even exist by the
time they repay their student loans. Technology has always destroyed jobs while
creating new ones. The uncomfortable truth is that the people losing today's
jobs rarely become the first people hired for tomorrow's opportunities.
The numbers tell their own story. By 2012, more than 99%
of the world's technologically stored information had become digital, compared
with less than 1% during the late 1980s. Humanity is now producing and storing
information at a pace unimaginable only a generation ago. AI feeds on that
mountain of digital information, learns from it, and becomes more capable with
each new generation of computing power.
That speed creates another problem. Politics moves like a
bicycle. Technology moves like a fighter jet.
Political scientist Samuel Huntington warned decades ago
that the greatest problem in politics is the inability of political
institutions to keep pace with social and economic change. I think that
observation has become even more relevant today than when he first made it.
Governments debate regulations while technology companies release entirely new
capabilities every few months. Legislatures hold hearings while algorithms
rewrite industries almost overnight. By the time policymakers finish arguing
over yesterday's technology, tomorrow's version has already arrived.
That gap creates frustration. Citizens begin demanding
leaders who promise certainty rather than competence. They reward confidence
instead of caution. They stop asking complicated questions because simple
answers feel emotionally satisfying. It is the oldest political trap in
history.
Social media has poured gasoline onto that fire.
Information no longer travels slowly enough for people to digest it. Every
outrage competes against another outrage. Every rumor races ahead of every
correction. Algorithms are designed to maximize attention, not wisdom. Recent
research suggests that algorithmic feeds can shape political attitudes by
changing what people repeatedly see online. The machine is not simply
delivering information anymore. Increasingly, it influences which information
reaches us first.
That should concern everyone regardless of political
affiliation.
Yet I refuse to become a technological pessimist. Every
major technological revolution has frightened people because every major
technological revolution changed the rules of survival. Electricity frightened
workers whose livelihoods depended on older industries. Automobiles terrified
businesses built around horses. Computers eliminated countless clerical jobs
while creating software engineering, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and
industries nobody imagined during the 1970s.
AI will probably follow that same pattern. It will
destroy. It will create. It will reward adaptability while punishing
complacency.
The real question is not whether AI will change
civilization. That argument is already over. The question is whether our
institutions, schools, businesses, and political systems can evolve quickly
enough to prevent fear from becoming more dangerous than the technology itself.
That is the lesson history keeps trying to teach us.
Technology rarely starts wars. Human beings do. Machines
do not vote. Citizens do. Algorithms do not embrace dictators. Frightened
societies sometimes do. Every generation likes to believe its crisis is unique.
I disagree. The machinery changes. Human psychology barely moves.
That is why I believe the greatest challenge of the AI
era is not building smarter computers. It is preserving calmer minds. We need
governments capable of responding without panic. We need education systems that
prepare people for constant reinvention rather than lifetime employment. We
need citizens who understand that uncertainty is the admission price for
progress.
The digital revolution is not slowing down for anyone. AI
will continue learning. Computing power will continue growing. Businesses will
continue replacing expensive labor with cheaper automation wherever economics
permits. That train has already left the station.
The real danger is allowing fear to seize the steering
wheel. History has shown me exactly where that road can end, and it is not a
destination I am eager to revisit.
