Nigeria’s government bankrolls pilgrimages while poor Nigerians go
hungry. Corrupt officials return with full pockets. Taxpayers return to
empty plates.
“Medicine?” the nurse asked.
“No funds.”
“Pilgrimage?”
“Pack your
bags.”
In Abuja, the suitcase gets fed. The patient gets a prayer. The school
roof caves in. The official flies out. He returns with shopping bags,
swollen pockets, and a
sermon about sacrifice.
The ordinary Nigerians and its taxpayer has already sacrificed
breakfast, blood, and the money for his child’s antibiotics.
“Have
faith,” the politician says.
Fine. Let
believers buy their tickets. Let investigators check the pockets.
Attention, Nigerian government: Public money needs a paper trail, not
a prayer shawl.
